Students  will gain hands-on experience in preparing clients, selecting appropriate equipment, performing venepuncture using correct techniques, managing infection control procedures, and responding to adverse reactions or complications.

Upon successful completion, students will be equipped with the skills needed to work as a phlebotomist or pathology collector in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, pathology labs, and general practice clinics.

Entry Requirements

Age 

Minimum Age 18 Years old

Education & Experience

One of the following:

  • Hold a qualification at certificate III level or higher in health 

OR 

  • hold skills equivalent to the qualification requirements validated through a recognition of prior learning process.

An intermediate level of English is required.

Evidence can be:

  • Year 12 certificate 
  • Certificate III or higher, or
  • Competence at or above level 3 English (LLN Test) 

Student Evidence 

Evidence of any of the below:

  • Australian citizenship;
  • Permanent Australian residency; or
  • Temporary Australian residency with a valid visa, other than the student visa, to study and work in Australia.

Students will be required to provide a Unique Student Identifier (USI) which is a reference number that creates an online record of a student’s training and qualifications attained in Australia.

 Work placement  

Grayclay’s Work Placement Program (WPP) forms a compulsory part of the student’s study and provides a vital and essential aspects of the learning experience. Students are required to complete 35 hours of work placement during their qualification. 

 

Students are assessed through observations in the workplace and documented interviews with the student and Workplace Supervisor throughout the Work Placement Program. A recommended Training Plan is given to both and the student is required to maintain a Logbook throughout the Placement, signed daily by the Workplace Supervisor (or their delegate).

Units assessed in the workplace include:

  • HLTPAT002 - Perform Venous Blood Collections 
  • HLTINF006 - Apply basic principles and practices of infection prevention and control 
  • HLTPAT001 - Identify and Respond to Clinical Risks in Pathology Collection
