A recent report from the Manufacturing Industry Skills Alliance – Better Manufacturing Apprenticeship Outcomes, highlights key reasons apprentices leave their training early.
The findings may surprise you.
The major factors impacting completion rates were:
- The supervisor–apprentice relationship
- The quality of on-the-job training
- Workplace culture
- Low pay
So what does this have to do with health?
The report notes: “Small and medium-sized businesses who have fewer resources can struggle to provide consistent, high-quality supervision and can lack access to internal training programs compared to larger organisations.”
Sound familiar?
Many general practices, allied health clinics and small health providers operate in exactly this environment. Clinical expertise does not automatically translate into leadership capability. Supervisors are often technically excellent, but may not have received formal training in leadership, communication or staff development.
Importantly, the study found that small employers want access to supervisor training that goes beyond technical instruction, focusing on:
- Leadership capability
- Communication skills
- Conflict management
- Mental health awareness
- Building positive workplace culture
