Individual Support in the Community Services Sector 

This nationally recognised qualification prepares individuals to work under supervision in community, home or residential care settings as part of a multi disciplinary team, providing person centred support to people who may need assistance. Learners develop factual, technical and procedural knowledge to carry out delegated tasks responsibly, in line with individualised support plans, legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

Course Information 

What you'll learn

In this qualification, you are expected to learn how to provide safe, respectful and person-centred support to individuals in community, home or residential care environments. This includes developing practical skills in supporting daily living activities, recognising and responding to individual needs, promoting independence and wellbeing, and communicating effectively with clients, families and members of a multi disciplinary team. Students also learn to follow individualised support plans and work within the scope of their role under supervision and delegation.

In addition, students gain knowledge of legal and ethical responsibilities, including duty of care, privacy, infection control, workplace health and safety, and relevant Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation. The training develops an understanding of ageing, disability and support practices, as well as the ability to reflect on own work, manage responsibilities, and contribute positively to quality service delivery through mandatory work placement and practical application of skills

Entry requirements

Age 

Minimum age 18 years old

​​English

An upper-intermediate level of English is required. Language, Literacy and Numeracy Test to be passed at an AQF level 3. 

Education and Experience

One of the following: 

- Year 10 or equivalent 2 years' work experience

OR 

- Completion of certificate II or higher qualification

Student Evidence 

Evidence of any of the below:

  • Australian citizenship;
  • Permanent Australian residency; or
  • Temporary Australian residency with a valid visa, other than the student visa, to study and work in Australia.

Students will be required to provide a Unique Student Identifier (USI) which is a reference number that creates an online record of a student’s training and qualifications attained in Australia.

Language, Literacy, Numeracy

Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) test is required prior to enrolment as part of the course entry process which will assist the college to determine the level of support the student will need to successfully complete their learning.

Work Placement 
Ama Queensland Education and Training Institute's Work Placement Program forms a compulsory part of the student's study and provides a vital and essential aspect of the learning experience. Students are required to complete 20 hours of work placement during their skill set duration of 1 term.
